How many tarantulas are there in the UK?

Russ fails to respond with anxiety to news of 50,000 tarantulas within ten miles of his childhood home.

Itsy was sad not to win cutest spider at the show. Next year maybe.

There was a time when the answer to this would have sent a shiver down my spine. The answer rather surprisingly was over 50,000 last week in the small town of Coventry alone. Is it an invasion you ask? No it was the British Tarantula Society's annual show.

This involves showing over 800 species of tarantula with competitions to see who's specimen is the best. If your not bothered by images of spiders you can see the BBC's article here. (WARNING SPIDER IMAGE)

Now here's the weirdest thing, I can actually look at the news article on this, see the inevitable picture of a BIG spider and not feel anxious. This is all the more impressive as my parents only live 10 miles from the show and it turns out I was visiting while it was on. In the past this would have sent a cold shiver down my spine!

I have to admit I was relieved to see the organiser's  comment to the reporter that they 'had not had any escapes!'
